60 Years Ago ~ Jacqueline Lee Bouvier and John Fitzgerald Kennedy Marry in Keely-designed Church
Sixty years ago ~ on this day September 12, 1953, Congresssman John Fitzgerald Kennedy married Jacqueline Lee Bouvier at a ceremony held in St. Mary’s Church in Newport, Rhode Island. We visited St. Mary’s Church last year, walked through the garden and the church interior. It’s a beautiful, traditional Catholic Church. For that Lowell connection and students of church architecture and architects – the current church building was constructed in 1848 and designed by Patrick C. Keely. Keely was the architect for some of our magnificent Lowell churches – among them St. Patrick’s, the Immaculate Conception and the now demolished St. Peter’s Church. On November 2, 2013, the Parker Lecture Series – co-sponsored by the Lowell Historical Society – will present “Glorious Gems of Lowell: Patrick Keely’s Legacy” at 2:00pm at St. Patrick’s Church in the Acre.
