Synopsis
The Massachusetts Presidential Primary was held on March 6, 2012. Statewide in the Republican Primary, Mitt Romney won with 72% of the vote, Rick Santorum received 12%, Ron Paul got 9.5%, and Newt Gingrich 4.6%. On the Democratic side, Barack Obama was unopposed. Here are the results from Lowell:

President Obama received 1006 votes.
The General Election was held on November 6, 2012. Statewide, Barack Obama received 1,812,027 votes to Mitt Romney’s 1,114,077. Obama won Lowell, 22,597 to 10,586. For U.S. Senate, Elizabeth Warren defeated Republican incumbent Scott Brown with Warren receiving 1,603,045 and Brown getting 1,372,068. Warren also won Lowell, 19,678 to 13,905. Niki Tsongas won a landslide victory against Jon Golnik, 180,928 to 91,559. In Lowell, Tsongas recieved 25,098 to 7247 for Golnik.
In the state house, State Senator Eileen Donoghue defeated Jim Buba, 40,752 to 15,125. In Lowell, Donoghue received 25,421 votes while Buba recieved 5789. In the 17th Middlesex house district, Dave Nangle defeated Martin Burke, 9125 to 2454. For Governor’s Council, Democrat Eileen Duff defeated Republican Maura Ciardiello, 196,885 to 148,457. In Lowell, Duff received 19,551 to Ciardiello’s 9022. Incumbent representatives Tom Golden and Kevin Murphy were re-elected without opposition as were Middlesex Clerk of Courts Michael Sullivan and Middlesex North Register of Deeds Richard P. Howe Jr. Sheriff Peter Koutoujian was elected to finish the unexpired Middlesex Sheriff’s position receiving 409,336 to Ernest Petrone’s 123,049. In a race outside of Lowell, Democratic incumbent Colleen Garry defeated Republican Cathie Richardson in a district comprising Dracut and Tyngsborough. Garry received 12,057 votes to Richardson’s 8530.
