In the Middlesex Register of Probate race, incumbent John Buonomo was arrested on August 6, 2008, for larceny. He had been secretly videotaped stealing cash from a copier machine in the adjacent Middlesex South Registry of Deeds. Buonomo was indicted and pled guilty and was sentenced to jail. Because his arrest happened after the signature-gathering period had closed, no other candidates were able to appear on the September primary election ballot. However, six ran write-in campaigns (Sean O’Donovan, Thomas Concannon, John Panica, John Aliperta, Paula Mattaliano and Richard Covino) but none even came close. Buonomo did resign from office and withdraw from the ballot before the primary. The Democratic nominee was selected at a caucus of all Democratic town committees from Middlesex County. The nominee selected there was Tara DeCristofaro, who won the general election in November.
