A busy week
Someone on Twitter this afternoon suggested that if any of the candidates for mayor of Boston had anything unsavory lurking in their backgrounds, today would be a good day to release it since no one would notice given all the other things happening. On Monday we had the Bruins lose to the Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup finals. Boston played gallantly – who can forget Gregory Campbell finishing his shift after sustaining a broken leg while blocking a slapshot? – but fell just short. Tuesday was the special US Senate election that was launched back at the beginning of the year when President Obama selected John Kerry to be his new Secretary of State. On an election day that was hazy, hot and humid (a high temp of 92 degrees) Ed Markey defeated Gabriel Gomez, 55% to 45%. That same day, a divided US Supreme Court (does it work any other way?) declared a key provision of the Civil Rights Act of 1965 to be Unconstitutional and a State Senator in Texas captured much of the nation’s attention and admiration by single-handedly sustained a twelve hour filibuster to prevent (temporarily) the nation’s most restrictive anti-abortion law from going into effect. Wednesday – wait, that’s only today – the US Supreme Court declared the Federal Defense of Marriage Act to be Unconstitutional and allowed Same Sex Marriage to resume in California while sidestepping the Constitutionality of such unions nationally. Then Twitter exploded this afternoon when Patriot’s tight end Aaron Hernandez was arraigned on murder and weapons charges. What will Thursday and Friday bring?
