A Crowded Field Gathers for a Run in the 1st Middlesex Senate District

I’ve always been a fan of former Lowell Mayor/ Lowell City Councilor Bill Martin. So, this Chris Scott interview with Bill in this current edition of LTC News was of interest.

Twenty years ago he ran for State Rep to replace retiring Rep Ed LeLacheur… it was a crowded field that included Bill Martin, Karin Theodoros, Rita Mercier, Steve Geary, Tewksbury’s Scott Consaul (Precincts 3-3A were in the district at the time) and David Nangle – who edged Bill out by 200 votes in the Democratic Primary. I had the pleasure of moderating a spirited debate with all these candidates. Bill – known for his interest in economic development – served as a Lowell City Councilor for 16 years and also served one term as Mayor before retiring. Now Atty. Bill Martin has decided to run in the 1st Middlesex State Senate race to replace Eileen Donoghue recently chosen to be the next Lowell City Manager. Candidates include three former Lowell Mayors – Bill Martin, Ed Kennedy, Rodney Elliott, a union lobbyist John Drinkwater and Westford School Committee Chair Terry Ryan who just opted out of the MA3/CD race in favor of this run. With the City of Lowell – the district includes the towns of Westford, Tyngsborough, Pepperell and Groton. It will be a lively and challenging race with diverse priorities and constituencies. I look forward to having all the candidates at a Greater Lowell Area Democrats (GLAD) meeting – all the communities in the Senate District are members. Stay-tuned.
