Media commentator Dan Kennedy on WGBH explains why Republic Presidential candidate Donald Trump is a special challenge to the media in reporting the reality of Trump’s attempt to win the White House. President Obama made similar remarks today, saying that Trump is in his own category of unfit for the Presidency, contrasting him to the past two GOP nominees, Mitt Romney and John McCain, neither of whom was considered unfit to fulfill the responsibilities of the office. It’s almost absurd that the national conversation has come to this. The pressure is on Republican leaders to retract their endorsements of Trump, making an historical choice of country over party. Kennedy puts this same choice to his colleagues in the media: Choose the facts over the customary equivalency in reporting on this unique political contest with so much at stake. It is not bias when a reporter factors in the potential perils of a President Trump.
