In The Nation magazine online, journalist and public intellectual Bill Moyers shares his view of where and when America started going down the wrong road. The essay is taken from a speech he gave in October and which has been making the rounds on the web. Read his analysis and call to arms here.
As I read Moyers’ words I kept thinking about all the work Marty Meehan did in Congress to try to reform the campaign finance system. He and Chris Shays and Russ Feingold and John McCain tried to change the system. They picked the right fight. For Moyers, it’s the flood of money from monied interests since the 1970s that has changed the political equation. The recent Supreme Court decision on corporate donations opened the way for even more of such money.
