“The Honors Program is proud to welcome the award-winning filmmaker Henry Ferrini to campus on November 18 as this year’s Honors Community Fellow. Ferrini will screen his 30-minute film, Lowell Blues, at the UMass Lowell Inn and Conference Center, 50 Warren Street in Lowell, at 4:00, followed by a discussion about Jack Kerouac in Lowell and the making of his film. The screening and film are free and open to the public. 

“Lowell Blues is a 30 minute Film Poem fusing language, music and image to explore Jack Kerouac’s childhood holy land – Lowell Massachusetts. The film is excerpted from Kerouac’s novel, Dr. Sax, set in his hometown. Lowell Blues interprets how place activates the writer’s imagination, and how the writer’s art reshapes his city with reverence and respect. Stunning images of Lowell are shown against the background of jazz music by Lee Konitz with readings by Gregory Corso, Johnny Depp, Carolyn Cassady, David Amram, Robert Creeley, and Joyce Johnson. 

“Henry Ferrini will be honored at the Francis Cabot Lowell Honors Faculty Fellow Fundraising Gala later that evening at a reception beginning at 5:30. The Honors Program will also be honoring emeritus faculty Anne Mulvey (Psychology) and David Wegman (School of Health and Environment) as Faculty Fellows as well as this year’s Honors Fellows Scholarship recipients. Tickets to the reception are $90.00, with proceeds going toward student scholarships; the film screening and discussion are free.
