This week’s Lowell Walk will begin at 10 am on Saturday (May 6) at Lowell National Park Visitor Center. The topic is Lowell Labor History and the walk will be led by UMass Lowell History Professor Bob Forrant, and by history graduate student Rachel Arnason.

“The Worker”

The walk will visit the sites of some of Lowell’s historic union halls and public art works dedicated to the city’s workers. Hear about major strikes in 1912 and the 1930s, the “red scare” that followed World War One, the fight for the ten hour day, the departure of the mills from Lowell, and much more.

The walk is free, lasts about ninety minutes, and will take place rain or shine.

Looking ahead, this spring’s Lowell Cemetery tours will be held next weekend. The first is on Friday, May 12, 2017, at 1 pm; the second on Saturday, May 13, 2017, at 10am. These tours both begin at the Lawrence Street Gate with parking available inside the cemetery. While the two tours cover the same content, much about this overall tour is new, so even if you’ve been on the spring tour before, consider joining us again.

After that, we’ll be off until Saturday, June 10, 2017, when the summertime downtown walking season commences. More on that in the coming weeks.
