School Street Cemetery

Thanks to Kim Zunino for her informative tour of the School Street Cemetery this morning. Dedicated 16 years before Lowell was incorporated as a town, School Street, also known as “Lowell Cemetery No. 1” is the city’s oldest public burial place. Roaming around the markers, names from the pre-Lowell period of our city’s existence are much in evidence such as Spalding, Bowers, Butterfield and Parker. The oldest grave in the cemetery is that of Rachel Parker who was buried in 1811. The most recent burial was in the 1950s.

    Hello,

    I’m trying to find the graves of William Henry Maddocks Sr. b. circa 1807. I know he had to die after 1845 when his last child George was born. He was married to Elizabeth Kemp b. circa 1805 . Both people are from Trowbridge, England in Wiltshire. They buried a child, Sarah Jane c. 1847. The vital records of Lowell state that they had other children that died,

    George d. 1834 They are supposed to be buried in GR 4
    Mary ann d.1835
    Mary ann d. 1843

    This family is different from William Henry Maddocks Jr. married to Mary Lewis. This man is the oldest surving child of the couple above. They are buried in the Edson Cemetery. Thank you for any help. e-mail gam@executivestyle.net

    Old English Cemetery

    This cemetery is located at 1099 Gorham Street and is approximately 196,385 square feet.
    The Old English Cemetery was purchased by the town of Chelmsford from Simon and Susanna Parker on March 31, 1832 for $428. It was officially designated as Cemetery No. 2 at the time.
