The Pawtucket Prism sculpture was created and installed by world-renowned artist Michio Ihara in 1987 at the Lower Locks where the Pawtucket Canal and Concord River meet.  It’s one of the many public art pieces in Downtown Lowell’s historic and canal cultural districts.

After many years, the sculpture fell into disrepair. In an effort to restore this integral piece of art, the Greater Lowell Community Foundation convened local donors, art enthusiasts, and community partners including Lowell National Historic Park, the University of Massachusetts Lowell, the City of Lowell, University of Massachusetts President Marty Meehan, and Middlesex Community College.

The Community Foundation, along with UMass Lowell and the City of Lowell, will host a rededication event at the site of the Pawtucket Prism followed by a reception at the UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center. Speakers at the event will include Community Foundation Executive Director Jay Linnehan, Lowell Mayor Edward Kennedy, Lowell City Manager Kevin Murphy, UMass Lowell Chancellor Jacquie Moloney, Middlesex Community College Board Chair Jim Campbell, and Lowell National Historical Park Superintendent Celeste Bernardo.Community members are welcome to attend and celebrate the restoration and reintroduction of this key piece of public art, and may RSVP to george@glcfoundation.org
