The Northern Canal Urban Renewal Project of the 1960s tore down the long-established Little Canada neighborhood and the Merrimack Mill complex to make way for new industry that never came. Today, UMass Lowell has an increasingly large presence in the Northern Canal district. Join Professor Bob Forrant and UMass Lowell graduate students to explore this neighborhood.
TOUR BEGINS AT HAWK’S NEST COFFEE SHOP/UNIVERSITY SUITES AT CORNER OF AIKEN AND PERKINS STREETS, JUST ACROSS FROM LELACHEUR FIELD. Parking is available curbside in the vicinity (remember to pay on Saturdays) or at the nearby Ayotte Garage next to the Tsongas Center.

In celebration of the National Park Service’s 100th birthday, Lowell National Historical Park is Bringing the Park to the People with a series of events at neighborhood parks in Lowell. Each event, among other things, will feature a neighborhood walk conducted by Lowell Walks and a neighborhood resident. The first such walk is:

In conjunction with Cambodian New Year celebration. Meet at Clemente Park, main stage. Cambodian New Year is an all-day celebration at Clemente Park that will draw thousands of people throughout the day. Parking in the vicinity is very limited so consider biking, walking, or parking nearby and walking if you want to experience Cambodian New Year and partake in this tour.
