First Thursday Walking Tour
There’s no such thing as bad weather; there’s only bad clothing. (Anonymous).
Tomorrow night (April 7, 2016) I will lead a walking tour of a portion of the Lowell Canal system as part of Downtown Lowell First Thursdays. The tour will begin at 6 pm at Lowell National Park Visitor Center at 246 Market Street, will last about an hour, and is free. The route will take us into the Hamilton Canal District, then down Jackson and up Central to Market then back to the visitor center. Along the way, I’ll talk about the history of the canals we pass, the mills that grew up around them, and what happened to those mills over time. We will also discuss the latest plans for the Hamilton Canal District and the Lord Overpass.
Now I know that the weather forecast is for rain, so we will take that into account. If the rain is light or moderate at 6 pm, the tour will proceed as planned so bring your raingear and an umbrella. If there is lightning or torrential downpours, we’ll limit our time outside and convert the tour to a talk somewhere with overhead cover.
There are many great art, entertainment, and food venues participating in First Thursday and they all will be open tomorrow night from 5 pm until 8:30 pm. Before and after the tour, please plan to visit at least a few of them. Check out the Downtown Lowell First Thursdays 2016 website for the full schedule.
