UMass Lowell Student Research Competition Winner
Computer Science doctoral candidate Zhongli Liu demonstrates “Hawk,” an unmanned mini helicopter-based aerial wireless kit for search, rescue and surveillance that she helped to design with her team Yinjie Chen, Benyuan Liu, and Asst. Prof. Xinwen Fu at the UMass Lowell Center for Cyber Forensics to assist in thwarting cyber crime. Hawk can intercept all of the wireless traffic to detect a signal sent during a hack; it flies in a perpendicular flight line and can be remotely programmed to search in a grid using this pattern. As Hawk approaches the pre-specified destination, it will stop at the precise signal strength detected. Liu and her team won the silver medal at the 2011 ACM Student Research Competition (SRC) in Las Vegas for their design of Hawk.
