December 21, 1988: Pan Am Flight 103 destroyed over Lockerbie, Scotland

Twenty-five years ago today, Pan Am Flight 103 was destroyed by a terrorist bomb over Lockerbie, Scotland. All 243 passengers and 16 crew members were killed as were 11 people on the ground. The bomb was the work of agents of the Libyan government.

A monument to the victims stands in Arlington National Cemetery (photos below). On the base of the monument is inscribed the following:

On 21 December 1988, a terrorist bomb destroyed Pan American Airlines Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, killing all on board and 11 on the ground. The 270 Scottish stones which compose this memorial cairn commemorate those who lost their lives in this attack against America.

    tragic.shocking.it hadn’t really happened before…..
    I can remember exactly where I was when I made the call
    the main thing is my heart goes out to family and friends of those lost
    and how terrible and terrifying for those poor unfortunates on board
    many who life was in full swing around the 23 years old mark
