‘Move to Russia,’ Said Anti-Dem. Protester to Me

Yesterday about noontime there was a political demonstration in front of Lowell City Hall. About 30 people ralled with a big drum, Republican candidate signs, and handmade placards. The demonstrators were campaigning for GOP candidates. Someone told me it was a Tea Party gathering, but I can’t say that for sure. Across Arcand Drive, near Cobblestones Restaurant, three young guys were on the sidewalk with a blue Niki Tsongas sign the size of a billboard. They had come over from Tsongas headquarters on Kirk Street to add a little balance to the scene.

I walked across Arcand to go to my appointment at City Hall. On the sidewalk stood a woman about 40 years old with a handmade sign that read “Niki T. Votes With Nancy P.” I said to the woman, “I’m happy that she does.” Without skipping a beat, the woman shouted at me: “Move to Russia.”

And that’s the way it is, as Walter Cronkite used to say.

LOVE Commie/Russian put downs and references. I am a teacher and our school’s asst. football coach once kicked a ball far at practice. The players told him he should be a soccer player. His response? “I am not a Communist.”

“You’ll…be pursued by the Editorial Cartoon Russian Bear with a knife, and in his bear hug he will poignard you in the reddy blood back to gleam in the pale Siberian sun-
    that is known as nightmares.”

Well, nearly twenty years after the fact, some people have yet to realize the old bugaboo Russia is no longer the Soviet Union, or communist. Maybe she should have said “move to Sweden” – that old socialist paradise. Yes, the democrats had an opportunity to do better.
