Mother’s Day
1.
I kick, stumble, stomp,
Scrape across cobblestones
Worn out from years of trudging.
I bend my knee and a shadow
Moves away, out of reach.
I pound; I break the shadow’s bones.
It changes like a fallen face
Moving across wet cobblestones.
Blood smears the worn-down shade.
The shadow lies whispering,
An old voice waiting.
I smell its breath, a musty odor,
Hear it calling, must go to the grave
Before the red smear dries,
Must listen to murmuring bones
That once sang under the sun.
I kneel with the shadow
Under me and dig closer to bone,
Plant Golden Showers,
For the keen memory
That keeps kicking, keeps stumbling
Over cobblestones, wet with clots of you.
I kneel and pray to air.
Your bones keep walking
Up and down the cobblestones,
Following as I pursue
A shadow beneath the Golden Showers.
2.
When I return
The white lungs of roses
Will breathe in mossy shadows,
Recline under arms
Of sleepy maple trees.
Petals will glide
In watery dreams
Across spaces.
Leaves will fall to their knees
In the ebony eyes of night.
A breath of earth
Will inhale in slow rhythm,
An old chimera will fade
As my fingers follow your light,
And brush the arching stars.
I will wet the shadow’s mouth
And listen to the silence.
Mist will rise in starlight,
And blades of grass will lift
The floor of darkness.
My hands will mend
A bridge between our shadows,
Between the green morning
And endless stars of nighttime.
When I return…
