Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lowell Reunion
Joe Hungler, the Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lowell, sent along some information about a Club Reunion that’s coming up on Thursday, October 1, 2015:
The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lowell, formerly the Lowell Boys Club, is having a Club Reunion on Thursday, October 1st at Four Oaks Country Club. Our theme is to “Honor the Past-Celebrate the Present-Look Towards the Future.” With over 115 years of history, we are consistently running into alumni and their parents, former board members, staff, volunteers and supporters who have so many great memories of their time at the Club. Some talk about their time on Dutton Street, some the “new” building on Middlesex Street. Some recall swim lessons, others watching movies, dances, playing basketball, wrestling or just the friendships made there. They all talk about the staff: Bill Vrettas, Bill Lapointe, George Laverty, Jesse Edwards and so many more. With Board Chair Brian Chapman being an alumnus of the Dutton Street Club and Executive Director Joe Hungler a former Club kid from Manchester, we know how much the Club means to those involved including the staff, board, parents and other supporters. We want to provide a venue for them to share their stories, allow us to appreciate their support and reconnect.
George Behrakis, Club alum and Hall of Fame member, has graciously agreed to talk about what the Club meant to him growing up and former Red Sox player Sam Horn will talk about his engagement with the Club and our kids. Emcee Representative Tom Golden will keep the program brief so that attendees can have fun and enjoy the memories. The event will start at 6:00 p.m. with a cocktail hour and wine tasting. We will have some old pictures displayed to remind people of our shared history. We hope that attendees will bring their own pictures and memorabilia from their Club days to assist with the Club’s history project as we rebuild our archives. We will also be publicizing the Dutton Street Society, a group of supporters who provide the foundation for our kids and the Club program on an annual basis. We are also excited to solicit nominations at the event for the Club’s first Hall of Fame class since 2001. Current Hall of Fame members include Telemachus and George Demoulas, George Behrakis, Fred C. Church, Major Walter Jayes, William, “Billy” King, John Notini and Ray Riddick.
For more information or to buy a ticket, please call Joe Hungler at the Club at 978-458-4526 x 10 or go to the Club’s website to purchase tickets which are $50 with a special $25 ticket for young alums age $25 and under.
Thanks Dick!
