Springfield newspaper: Meehan for President of UMass
As the trustees of the University of Massachusetts commence a nationwide search for a new president to replace the retiring Jack Wilson, the Springfield Republican on Sunday weighed in with its candidate:
Former U.S. Rep. Martin M. Meehan, now chancellor of UMass-Lowell, has worked diligently to transform his alma mater into a first-rate institution. The Lowell campus has undergone several incarnations since its birth as the Lowell Normal School and Lowell Textile School, but its recent growth in stature and popularity has been remarkable. . . . Meehan has used his understanding of higher education and the political system to make things happen in Lowell. Perhaps it’s time to bring his talents to the entire university.
