“Downtown Detour Notice”
From the city of Lowell’s website (see diagram at link):
MARKET/CENTRAL/PRESCOTT IMPROVEMENTS
The Contractor will need to implement Stage 1 and Stage 2 Detours at Central/Market/Prescott Intersection beginning on Wednesday July 7th at 7:00AM through Thursday July 8th at 9:00AM. This detour is necessary to finish paving the roadway surface through the entire intersection. All paving is expected to be completed by Thursday July 8th at 9:00AM. Please make note of the detour and inform customers, deliveries, visitors. Police details will be posted to help direct traffic during this period.
I bet many downtown travelers hope the “all paving will be finished by 9 am on Thursday” part of this notice is accurate. I’ve had to drive downtown several times, but warned of the traffic tie-ups caused by this project, I took circuitous routes through the Acre and upper Merrimack Street. So far, I’ve been minimally inconvenienced. Others have not been so lucky. “Avoid driving downtown at all costs” was a phone call made and received yesterday and today by many folks I know. Let’s hope they stay on schedule.
UPDATE: Here’s a link to the Lowell Police Department blog with more info about construction related closures of Fr Morissette Blvd and Stevens Street.
I hope all the downrown street, sewer and sidewalk work is finished by July 21st so that it’s all clear for the Lowell Folk Festival set-up. It’s good though that all this necessary work is being done… ARRA funds at work?
Probably not Marie. Most of those funds were tied up keeping greedy teachers from receiving pink slips.
Well, the city’s website was incorrect regarding the time that the Market-Central Street job would be finished. Tonight at 5 pm Market Street was still closed and the surrounding roads were all clogged. Hopefully the work will be finished tonight and the road reopened by the morning.
