Remembering Jefferson Street

The Lowell Historical Society (LHS) is co-sponsoring a free program in collaboration with the Hellenic Culture and Heritage Society as well as the Coalition for a Better Acre at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 4 at the NPS Visitors Center (246 Market Street). Lew Karabatsos, Treasurer and past president of LHS will offer a lecture titled Remembering Jefferson Street: A little piece of the Greek Acre.

Before the North Common Village Housing Project, Jefferson Street was a little neighborhood nestled in the Greek Acre section of the city. Although small, it was home to dozens of Greek families and businesses before it was obliterated in 1940. Using research and information from his father who lived there, Karabatsos will give us a glimpse into a neighborhood that once was.
