  • Incumbents Thomas Casey and Raymond Lord failed to win re-election.

  • Incumbent George Anthes, who finished 10th in the prior election, finished the term of Samuel Pollard who resigned shortly before he passed away.

  • M. Brendan Fleming was elected mayor on the first ballot.  

  • B. Joesph Tully was city manager.

  • On the school committee, former school committee member Kathryn Stoklosa joined incumbents Gerald Durkin, Clement McDonough, George O'Hare, Daniel Kane and William Kirwin.

  • Former school committee member Gus Coutu was elected to the city council and did not seek re-election to the school committee.

  • Outgoing Mayor Robert Maguire fractured his kneecap on election day when struck by a car while he was campaigning on a traffic island at Andover and Nesmith Streets.
