Lowell Cemetery tours today, tomorrow

Samuel Gibby & family

The latest weather forecast predicts sunshine this afternoon and tomorrow morning, perfect conditions for touring historic Lowell Cemetery, especially with the leaves beginning to assume their fall colors.

Today’s tour begins at 1 pm; tomorrow’s at 10 am. Both start inside the Knapp Avenue entrance (77 Knapp Ave) where there’s plenty of parking along the wide cemetery avenue. The tour lasts 90 minutes, is free, and requires no advance registration.

For those who have been on this fall tour before, much about this year’s tour will be different so there will be plenty of new stories, even for repeat visitors.

Tomorrow’s tour will end at the brand-new Oliver Whipple Columbarium and Garden of Remembrance. The Columbarium is a series of cured granite walls with niches to hold cremated remains. There is also a pavilion, paved pathways, and a number of benches, making it a perfect spot for quiet contemplation. The official dedication of the Columbarium will take place at 11:30 am tomorrow, just as the tour ends. At the same time, the Lowell Historical Society will present a display of cemetery artifacts at the nearby chapel.

Please consider joining us today, tomorrow, or on both days.
