To get in shape, get a dog

The “Well” health blog on the New York Times website reports on a study done at the University of Missouri that tried to determine whether you realize greater improvements in fitness by walking with another person or by walking with a dog. The study found that the 2-human teams would reinforce each other’s excuses for not walking and were therefore less likely to exercise regularly. The subjects who paired up with dogs faced no such distractions. Quite the contrary, the dogs were unrelenting in their desire to hit the streets no matter what the time or the weather. I completely concur with these findings. From past experience, I know that it’s tough to turn down someone who looks at you like this:

Great Post!! I am a 1000 X more active as a dog owner. Even more remarkable are the places/local hot spots that I’ve discovered that I otherwise wouldn’t have without an additional four legs in the house. I’m talking about forest preserves, paths, trails….the works.
OMG, I want to take her for a walk just looking at her in the photo!
Of course, that enthusiasm would wane today with the severe cold…
Actually, thinking on it, one of the breeds we are looking at would REALLY not have done well the last couple of days (Italian Greyhound).
