The final score was Chelmsford 28, Lowell 8 but last night’s high school game at Cawley Stadium was about more than football.  It was Senior Night and all the seniors (students, not the elderly) in the band, on the football team, and on the cheerleading squad were honored along with their parents.  The introduction of the band members was a revelation to me.  My son was active in the LHS band throughout his high school career, but he graduated two years ago.  The seniors being introduced last night were only very young sophomores back when I last chaperoned a band event and they suddenly seemed so much older.

As for the game, Chelmsford dominated from the opening kickoff which was returned for a touchdown. By halftime, the visitors were up 21-0 and proved repeatedly that they are a talented, hard-hitting football team.  Lowell didn’t give up and though the outcome was never in doubt, the home team did score a late touchdown.  Both bands performed at halftime with Chelmsford playing songs from the group Chicago and Lowell playing a show called “Urban Soundscape” by various artists.  The night was cold and windy which may have kept down attendance as did the fact that the game occurred after the city election – there wasn’t much campaigning going on last night; only post-election analysis.

Even if you don’t have a child or grandchild participating, taking in a high school sporting event or concert is time well spent – it’s usually very entertaining, but more importantly, seeing kids flowering into responsible young adults makes you feel good about your city.
