In a surprise move last night the Tewksbury Board of Selectman narrowed down the field of viable finalist for town manager from three to two.  Last week a screening committee, charged with paring down the list of 50 candidates, sent the board the names of three finalist: Mass Development VP Richard Montuori, Swampscott Town Administrator Andrew Maylor and Lawrence Budget Director Mark Andrews. During last nights selectmen’s meeting the board voted to set up public interviews of the finalist. Chairman Todd Johnson brought forward the name of each candidate individually and asked for a vote of the board. The results…selectmen voted unanimously to interview Richard Montuori; selectmen voted unanimously to interview Andrew Maylor…but when Johnson brought forward the name of the third finalist Mark Andrews, the room filled with dead silence…an awkward, dead silence. In a stunning development, not one selectman voted to interview Andrews. The board’s action (or should I say non-action) essentially eliminates the former Lawrence Budget Director from the town manager selection process. Now the question is…will Tewksbury Selectmen add another third candidate before the public interviews?
