Sparrow Offsprings?

Call me naive…but I am having trouble comprehending the re-emergence of “pirates”. And as much as I want to, I can’t even blame George Bush for these modern day swashbucklers. In case you haven’t heard…Yesterday an oil tanker filled with $100 million dollars in Saudi fuel was hijacked by Somalian Pirates. And last night pirates stuck again. First, “me hearties” tried to capture an Indian Warship, but were repealed by the good guys when they started firing back. Then later a different group of rogue mariners successfully hijacked a cargo ship carrying wheat to Iran. Iran! Yes, the one that is part of the Bush’s Axis of Evil (see, I can’t blame the lame duck here either)….this is truly a world problem. This all just seems insane to me…I am having trouble visualizing a modern pirate…Do they drink a noggin of rum? Do you say “arrrrrrgh“? Do they brush their teeth? Are any of them related to Blackbeard? I know, its me…but I just can’t help but imagine Jack Sparrow (sorry that’s Captain Jack Sparrow) sailing the Black Pearl to within inches of one of these modern mega-ships, casting lines across and boarding it… Heck, I thought we solved this pirate thing years ago. Aye Maties?
A couple of things cross my mind here. First, shouldn’t the Saudi Air Force have the capacity to do something about this?? Second, what are the pirates going to do with all that oil?? Let ‘em keep it. They’ve gotta get off the boat at some point. Then we shoot them.
Tony, these guys are poor fisherman.They are looking for the big bucks. So they hijack a dozen ships. It the ship companies are at fault. They are the one’s paying the big ransoms. The Saudi Royal Air force has to protect the kingdom.
I’ve read that there are modern day pirates all over the world. I can remember a story of wealthy Americans who had their yacht hijacked somewhere in the bahamas a few years ago by what were described as pirates.
Poor fishermen my ass. Go out to the New York Times and read some interviews with these guys. Go out to CNN.com and read about the lifestyles they lead after they make a score. The issue here is hunger. Let’s feed them and they won’t need to hijack any more ships. And if they do, we shoot them.
